The staff were friendly, spoke English, and pointed out some checkpoints on the map. I appreciated that. I wasn't too upset about the stay since it was just a city trip and we only used the room to sleep, but I wouldn't recommend the hotel to a friend. Maybe to someone I don't like ;-) It was cold at night, with no floor heating and a low room temperature. There was no sound insulation at all, so we could hear everything from our floor and outside the building. In the 21st century, free WiFi in the lobby should be a minimum, but there wasn't any. The room safe was also awkward: every time you opened it, you had to insert one euro to lock it again, so it wasn't very usable for cameras or other things you need to take in and out several times a day. I was there for a few days in May 2013.

We chose the Hotel Asturias restaurant for my parents' golden wedding anniversary because we needed somewhere central and convenient for everyone. The service was prompt and attentive, and they seated us in a quiet section away from the other diners. Portions were generous, the food was delicious, and it cost much less than many places we'd considered. The decor isn't especially original, with traditional Castilian-style tables and salmon tones, but the place is still worth it. I don't know the hotel itself, so I can't recommend that, but the restaurant is worth considering for an informal celebration.

I have so many memories of this hotel from when I left it in 1978. The staff were kind and attentive, and I'd be very happy to visit again. It's right in the heart of Madrid, around Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Cibeles, and Avenida José Antonio.

The staff were generally fine, and the location is the only reason I'm giving one star. The hotel is old and run-down, with dated decor, cracks in the walls and ceilings, and an absolutely disgusting interior courtyard. The bathrooms are old and nothing special, with one soap and shampoo dispenser for both washing your hands and showering. The bed had a broken leg, so you had to be careful leaning on that side. The TV was old and had no remote. There was nobody checking luggage in the room: you just arrived, left your bag, and picked it up later, so someone could easily make a mistake or take the wrong suitcase. They really should consider a complete renovation of the common areas, rooms, and bathrooms.
