We felt unsafe after someone unlocked our door and tried to come in while we were taking a midday nap. We ended up moving to the Oxygen Hostel a few blocks away. The place reeks of cigarettes, and it’s really a floor in a residential apartment building rather than a hotel, which makes getting in difficult. Once we reached the right floor, there was no front desk, so we waited around until someone noticed us. You get what you pay for: the rooms are dingy, and we wondered whether they had bedbugs.

I was left stranded in Madrid at midnight with nowhere to go, and had to book the nearest reasonably priced hotel for $220 per night. I’d booked multiple nights, so I returned the next morning hoping to check in. I went at 9:30am and again at 10:15am, but the doors were locked and nobody answered the building intercom. hotels.com still couldn’t reach the property. The listing said check-in started at 2 pm and ended “anytime,” while the fine print said the front desk was open from 9am to 9pm and late check-in could be arranged by contacting the hotel. I needed to arrive after 9pm, so I messaged twice and got no response. I called about a dozen times between 9am and 9pm, with no answer. The alternative number on the hotel website was out of service. hotels.com couldn’t get hold of anyone either. When I arrived at 11pm, the doors were locked and nobody answered the intercom despite my trying for 30 minutes. hotels.com tried again and emailed management, but 48 hrs later there was still no reply. This place is a scam. I strongly advise staying away to avoid issues.

The cigarette smell in the hotel hallway was the worst part. The location is 10/10, but this is a very cheap, bare-bones hotel. Rooms have basic bedding, a shower, a tiny TV, and a sink. Toilets are separate, with 2 shared between the 8 rooms. There’s free wifi, and an elevator on the first landing. Take it up to level 3, then walk down one flight to the hotel door. The hotel shares an entrance and stairwell with other apartments. Only a couple of rooms have a nice view of El Retiro Park; the others have windows looking inward but no view. Room A has by far the best view. There are no refunds.

At checkout the guy running the place hurried me out, even though at other places I’ve stayed you can use the lobby and wifi. I needed to book somewhere for the next night, but while I was in the hall arranging it, he turned off the internet router and I couldn’t use the wifi anymore. After check-in I couldn’t find anyone to ask for a clean towel, and the towel I had was dirty. The room was very, very small for the price. The old mattress had a spring poking through it that nearly cut my leg. This was my worst stay in Madrid, and I regret spending money here. The guy who runs the property is one of the worst people I’ve ever met. I can’t say enough how horrible the experience was, and how horrible he is. I wish I could give the place zero stars. Don’t stay here. Spend your money somewhere better!

Clean rooms that work fine for a short stay. Mine had no windows, so the air felt a little heavy.
