There’s a lovely view of the Royal Palace from the theater’s terrace, which is included in the tour. I found the audio tour enjoyable, though fairly basic, and it was the only English option available at the time we needed to go. The guided tour might cover more; there’s also a technical backstage tour, but that one is only in Spanish. The opera theater is beautiful and has an interesting history, so it’s worth a visit if you like theater, architecture, or Spanish history. For the self-guided audio tour, bring your own smartphone and earphones. You need to buy tickets online ahead of time or pay by credit card at the theater, since they don’t take cash. The audio tour is available in Spanish, English, and French. We saw a Russian woman with a phone or a credit card get very frustrated.

That premium ticket service felt a little underwhelming. The only extra seemed to be leaving a coat or belongings at the cloakroom. Still, it was a small complaint beside the beauty and grandeur of Teatro Real. I went on February 14, 2026 for Giuseppe Verdi’s I masnadieri (The Bandits / The Robbers), and the evening was memorable. The building is magnificent and elegant, with such a special atmosphere that I didn’t want to leave. The hall was excellent and the opera performance outstanding. I’d absolutely recommend a visit.
The Romeo and Juliette production looked gorgeous, and the whole opera experience was fantastic. Singing, orchestra, core de bal-ay, and stage decorum were all up to T. Plus, Moet was served in proper flutes on every level of the theater. Cheers!
The building pairs a classical look with a modern touch, including photovoltaic panels on the roof that make it a sustainability reference point for historic venues. Inside, red and gold elegance is matched by modern engineering and advanced stage machinery, while the 1990s renovation brought in the balanced acoustics the house is known for. Its international program ranges from major operas and top tier casts to ballet and contemporary work, keeping it among Europe’s leading theaters. The staff and operations feel polished without being stiff, from entering through to curtain call. Set opposite the Royal Palace, Teatro Real feels like part of Madrid’s cultural core. Tradition, technology, and artistic ambition come together here for nights that feel special.
The tour lasts about an hour, so it’s a good stop if you have plenty of time in Madrid. It’s a beautiful theater that shows off the city’s richness.
