For the price, Hostal Excelsior is a strong option in a convenient spot on Gran Via. The 24-hour staff were friendly, and my room was cleaned daily. The rooms labeled “superior” have been remodeled, with fancy lighting and bathrooms that are small but adequate. The downsides for me were that Wi-Fi didn't reach my corner room and there's no kitchen.

The rooms are very basic, but extremely clean. The hostel is right in the heart of madrid, and the staff are really nice and helpful.

The location is good, but the room smelled bad. There isn't a kitchen. The hostal is very old, with just furniture, and they don't seem to have put any care into making it a bit more comfortable.

Right in the heart of Gran Via, and the staff are really friendly and attentive.
