Hostal Sol Square Madrid

The included breakfast was a steal, and the location is great. It’s a nice little hostal, with small rooms but the things you need. Just be warned that the walls are paper thin. I could hear everything next door, including someone snoring so loudly that I got around 2 hours of sleep. If you’re a light sleeper, keep that in mind.

We had a brilliant three-night stay and would definitely come back. The room was very clean, and the staff were friendly. It’s near several central metro stops and most tourist attractions are within walking distance. The only downside was the thin walls: we could hear people going along the corridor late at night and very early in the morning.

The mattress was very good, not too soft, and we had a balcony in the room. Breakfast was simple and tasty, with some changes each day. The staff were lovely, especially the breakfast lady. She noticed there weren’t many vegetarian options and brought us cucumbers and tomatoes just for us. We still wished there were more vegetarian choices available by default, like vegetables. The central location meant everything was close, but it also got noisy at night. The streets could be busy, with garbage trucks or other very loud vehicles we couldn’t identify. That’s something to expect in the city center. There’s a lift, but a couple of stairs between level 0 and the exit could be an issue for wheelchair users or people with lots of luggage. We had a kettle in the room but no cups.

The parking was said to be free, but it wasn’t. We had to pay 25€ instead of 28€, so be careful. The bathroom was flooded, too. The AC stopped working again after the receptionist got it running, and I ended up leaving it alone so I could try to sleep. He came to our room at 2am to fix it while people were in bed trying to sleep, which felt totally unprofessional. The hotel should have offered us another room, but didn’t. We got free breakfast the next day after 10am, as we were checking out. The staff were very unfriendly, and apart from the location, nothing was good. In my opinion, they should lose their license.
