The beds have curtains for a bit of privacy, and there’s a microwave and electric kettle. It’s about a 20-25 minute walk to the city centre, which was manageable. I was put in the secondary building, separate from the main one. Reception staff were often absent there, so any problem meant walking back to the other building. The check-in was slow, and staff came across as cold. My eight-bed mixed dorm was extremely cramped, with barely room to move. There was only one small locker under the bed, nowhere near enough for ordinary luggage or belongings. The motion-activated lights in the room and bathroom switched off far too quickly. Eventually, the room light stopped working altogether. I stayed in late December over New Year, and there was no heating in the room or common areas. The blanket was very thin, and I was shivering while trying to sleep. Several long-term residents shared my room and took up much of the common space with their things. It smelled bad, they were unwelcoming, and they talked loudly between 1 and 2 a.m. On New Year’s Eve the noise went on until nearly 4 a.m. I had to check out at 10 the next morning, so it was especially disruptive. Short-term guests shouldn’t be put in rooms with long-term residents. The poor management and uncomfortable winter conditions made the stay very unpleasant. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it, especially to winter visitors or short-term travelers.

Some people in the dorm seemed to live there long-term rather than travel. The older woman in the bed below me complained about every small noise, even when I closed the window or the bed creaked. I woke up three or four times and barely slept two hours. Smoke from people outside came right into the room. With the window open it was cold, but the room still felt stuffy. The room was an eight-bed dorm, and my bed had no curtain. Staff didn’t explain anything about the hostel and barely spoke English. Motion-sensor lights kept coming on whenever someone moved in the top bunk. The window faced a noisy street, so every car and passerby could be heard, and the ceiling fan kept loudly switching on and off all night. The mattress was thin and uncomfortable. Doors closing in other rooms made the wall shake. The blanket looked old and dirty, the room got cold in the morning because the window had to stay open, and the top bunk felt unsafe without a guard rail. A fall from there could seriously hurt you. I’d thought the price was cheap before arriving, but after staying there it didn’t seem worth it. I’ve traveled around Europe for over a month and stayed in lots of hostels, and this was by far the worst. It felt more like a trap than a hostel: loud, dirty, uncomfortable, and badly managed. It was like paying to be tortured. I strongly recommend avoiding it, even if it looks inexpensive. I rarely leave negative reviews, but people should know what the stay was like.

The dorms smelled like feet, and people shouted on their phones in the rooms. The hallway was covered with black bags full of laundry and garbage. In the bathroom there was hair everywhere, fecal stains in the toilet, and a mop bucket full of dirty-looking water that seemed like it had been there since the place opened. This was supposedly after cleaning. It was absolutely disgusting. I rarely post negative reviews, but people should be warned. Don’t go there.

The price was 50 euros for one night, which felt high for what you get. Check-in was confusing: you’re supposed to do it online beforehand, but the key-generator link they send doesn’t work, so you end up checking in at reception. The place feels sad and unsociable, with small rooms and only basic bathroom facilities. The hairdryer runs for about a minute before giving off a strange burnt smell. Beds are basic, pillows and blankets are poor quality, and towels and lockers cost extra. It also seemed that some people living there weren’t tourists, which didn’t feel like a tourist-friendly setup. Solo female travelers in particular should pay attention: it seemed unsafe, especially on the street just outside the entrance, where there were lots of drunk people at night. It wouldn’t take much to improve things: better safety and easier check-in, better pillows and blankets, repainting the walls, and setting up the common areas could bring in other kinds of travelers too.

When I arrived, nobody was at the property and calls got no answer, so I had to find another hotel for the night. The next day they refused to check me in, then after an argument gave me a dirty room that was completely different. The staff were rude and dishonest, and I lost two days in Madrid because of this. MYD Madriz Hostel & Hostel MYD La Latina was a complete disaster. Avoid this place.
