Plaza Mayor is easy to take in with a half-hour stroll. Start with a wide view from the center, looking toward the arcades, then wander beneath the arches and through the covered walkways. You'll find old cafés and shops, stone archways, traditional architecture, street performers, and plenty of local atmosphere. Comfortable shoes help, and there are cafés and souvenir shops nearby. Make time for the bronze equestrian statue of Philip III of Spain and notice how the surrounding buildings fit together. Casa de la Panadería is another good stop, especially for its colorful frescoes and historic facade. Both make memorable photo spots. You can pause at a terrace café for coffee or a light snack and watch the busy square, with music and people moving through it. Early morning is quieter for photos, while evening brings lively energy and lighting on the buildings. Finish with a panoramic view from a corner archway or the center. It's a short way to experience the history, architecture, and atmosphere of Plaza Mayor.

The square's architecture really impressed me. Its red facades and graceful arcades feel harmonious and grand, and the history is everywhere. Walking into Plaza Mayor felt like stepping back in time, even with modern Madrid's energy all around. There were cafés, street performers, and people from all over enjoying the lively setting. It's one of Madrid's most iconic places, and absolutely worth a visit. ¡Madre mía, what an impressive square!

We happened to stay beside the square during a Spanish public holiday celebrating one of the saints. It was packed, with a music stage and Spanish dancing alongside music from different genres and regions. Around the edge you'll find food stalls, restaurants, souvenir shops, a hat shop, and jewelers.

This busy, touristy square is free to enter and has lovely architecture, plenty of spots for people-watching, and lots of restaurants and shops in and around it. It's also used for concerts and celebrations. We caught part of the festivities for Madrid's patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, the city's biggest traditional celebration in mid-May. The square was packed well into the early hours.
