The restaurant has very few vegetarian choices, so our group ate in Morella, about 20 minutes south, where we found several good options. The hotel has a warm rural feel and friendly staff. Downstairs, the building keeps its original character, while the upstairs rooms bring in modern touches. My room was spacious and spotless. The owner’s wife speaks fluent English; the rest spoke Spanish. They were understanding, and with a translation app we managed everything we needed. It almost felt like family. And if you enjoy a mild, smooth coffee, don’t miss the cappuccino.

We didn’t feel welcome at any point and wouldn’t recommend staying here or come back. Our deluxe room was clean and fine for a night, but overpriced at €125, especially with not even a small bottle of water. The only friendly person was the owner, once he finally appeared for check-in. Before that, our first contact was a legal notice about responsibility. Even getting a cup of coffee at breakfast seemed too complicated, so I can only imagine trying to get an actual breakfast. The keys for every room were left out where anyone could take them at the deserted lobby, which hardly inspired confidence about the security we were reminded was our responsibility.

In winter, lunch is served in the downstairs bar. It’s simple comfort food, with 3-4 choices each for starters, mains, and desserts. The stewed white beans, pork fillets, and homemade flan were good quality and good value, served in a friendly atmosphere. Back in August 2021, we came for Saturday lunch and had the weekend set menu for €25. You need to book. On weekdays it was €17. They started with bread, black olives, and tomato and onion salad from the kitchen garden. I had the delicious chickpea stew with crayfish, while the other starter was migas aragonesas. We both had tender local lamb, then suspiro de moro for dessert, a sponge base with cream and chocolate and almond sauce.

We had the very comfortable family room with half board. Breakfast was delicious, and dinner was decent. Would love to visit again.

I first stumbled on this lovely hotel 12 years ago, and I was impressed again when I returned last week. It’s a great place for a short break, in a pretty mountain village. The staff and service are great, and the architecture and interior design are striking.
