Cactus Bed & Breakfast Salinas

The only downside for me was having to share the bathroom. The receptionist was so sweet, and the breakfast choices were really healthy. When I mentioned I’d be leaving too early for breakfast the next day, they even put together a little lunch bag for me.

The staff were friendly and tried their best despite their limited English, and the cleaning lady was a lot of fun. She seemed genuinely sad when we had to leave early, two nights ahead of schedule, because of food poisoning we’d got a few days before. We weren’t refunded any of what we’d paid. The Cactus Salinas family has a great idea, and I might have rated it a 4 if the price had been closer to the quality. Inside, they’ve decorated the building around a Frida Kahlo theme, and it’s not bad, though there are lots of unexpected steps that are easy to trip on. Tall people may bump their heads on low ceilings, and the room handles are far below hip height. Our private room’s bathroom was tiny, and at the price we paid, we still had just one toilet shared with several rooms on the floor. The balcony faced other people’s rooms. We stayed a few nights. The area was the biggest letdown: the building is right beside a very noisy road, and the industrial surroundings are ugly. We knew it was a bit far from the beach from looking at Google, but the map didn’t make the industrial setting so clear.

I’d happily stay at Cactus again ❤️ The rooms, toilets, and bathrooms were lovely and clean, and both breakfast and lunch were great. The staff were especially kind and friendly. I couldn’t speak any Spanish, so communicating was a real challenge, but they helped however they could. I hadn’t booked ahead, which made arranging a room difficult for them, yet they still found me a great place to stay and even set me up with a surf class. Thank you so much!

We’d booked two nights, and the host confirmed on the day. But when we arrived to check in, the hostel was shut and there was no way to get in. We spent over two hours trying to reach the host and got no reply. At 10:30 p.m. we had to look for a hotel outside the small town, where nothing else was available. It was very stressful and disappointing. We’d given plenty of notice about our arrival, and still haven’t heard anything or received an apology.
