Masia Can Canyes & Spa

The setting is quiet and peaceful, just right for unwinding after the rush of Barcelona City. We’d happily book again. Our handicapped suite had a large, modern bathroom with views of the wine vines, and the bed was very comfortable. The owner’s family has been there since 1712, and the staff were polite and efficient. We enjoyed the continental buffet breakfast and a gin and tonic by the pool and garden during the tardeo, which runs until 7pm. We didn’t try dinner, maybe next time. The spa has a hot tub, steam room, dry sauna, hot and cold showers, and a cold-water drop bucket that was fun. Highly recommend the massage, too. The masseuse was TOP. It’s a good spot for travelers looking for peace and quiet.

The private-use spa, bookable by the hour, is the one part I’d recommend. For everything else, I’d rate the place around 3*, and that feels generous. It’s often promoted as a 4* or 5* hotel, which I found grossly misleading after staying there. This is an old country house that seems to have been modernized haphazardly for starry-eyed tourists rather than restored while keeping its possible original charm, and it has some serious flaws. Given the prices, which seem to change almost as fast as supermarket prices depending on where and when you book, I expected a well-appointed hotel and professional management. I’m not trying to stop anyone from going, but go with your eyes open and compare the many offers. If you’re not young and fit, take extra care.

The dinner was a real highlight. We arrived early and were the first guests, so it felt intimate and grand. The food was excellent, and the waiter took such care with everything, even portioning the food spoonful by spoonful at a separate table. His manner and attire added to an evening that felt like what I’d expect at the finest Michelin-starred restaurants. The space was lovely, too. Breakfast was a fresh spread of meats, pastries, cheese, and more, with coffee or cappuccinos brought to the table. We preferred sitting outdoors. The grounds had greenery and a small farm with goats, ducks, and donkeys. The pool stayed tidy and comfortable throughout our visit. Our room was comfortable and well equipped, though the overhead showerhead was broken. The split AC cooled it quickly, and the bed was very comfortable. Around the Masia, grape fields and quiet made for a peaceful setting. Driving there in our rental car was easy, even on the back roads. Staff at the front were kind and spoke English well, as well as Catalan. They took extra time without us asking to find wineries with available tours, which felt very much like concierge service. The few other guests we crossed paths with were polite and respectful. We had an incredible stay and would gladly return.

The food was delicious, and I’d highly recommend the gastro package. We went for a relaxing weekend away from the city, and it was a wonderful experience with lovely service. Shoutout to David the night manager for his thoughtful recommendations and care. I’d recommend the place to anyone.
