Hotel Diego

The tasting menu was the reason we stayed a second night, and it was absolutely worth it. For €45 per person, we got seven courses plus entrees, and every dish was delicious. The restaurant is fantastic, with a wonderful wine cellar. Breakfast was nice too, with eggs cooked to order and lovely coffee. The rooms and hotel have been refurbished to a lovely modern standard, with blackout shutters, a walk-in shower, and a smart TV. If you don't want Spanish TV, there are plenty of American and English films and shows. Press the speech-bubble button to switch to the original language. The staff were super friendly. We arrived at 11pm for our first night, too late for us to eat, but seeing the menu convinced us to stay longer. I can't see this as a two-star hotel. Maybe that's because there's no pool, jacuzzi, fridge, or kettle in the room. There's a car park, plus a quiet local free car park right next door. Highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.

The restaurant felt overpriced for ordinary, just-okay dishes. I ordered a glass of wine but was served the whole bottle and charged for it in the morning. They also charged for bread I hadn't wanted or received at dinner. Still, they treated me well, so I'd give it three stars. The room wasn't comfortable: the thermostat was three meters up, so I couldn't adjust the heat, and the ventilation ran noisily all night. The pillows weren't great either. The bed was too short for me, even though I'm only 1.80 m, a little under six feet, which isn't unusually tall.

The only issue was an electrical buzzing from something in the kitchen below our room, and it went on constantly. Diego, the owner, was always around checking that everything was all right. It's a lovely hotel, well placed for the motorway, and we'd definitely come back.

If you're spending time at Delta de l'Ebre, this place is worth a visit. The dishes serve up happiness, with Diego as one of the ingredients. Whatever you order, fish or meat, it's a delightful experience.
