After finishing my walk, this was just right for staying in Santiago. I got a private room at a good price, with beautiful windows.

There's a communal sitting area with tea, coffee, and little snacks, and the location is great. The rooms were nice, clean, and comfortable, and the price was good for somewhere so close to the centre of Santiago. The shower is in a very small corner, with just a curtain between it and the toilet. A slightly longer curtain might have kept the floor by the toilet drier. There was some street noise at night, too.

I've stayed here twice, and the service has been good and the value solid both times. The rooms are clean and pleasant, the staff are friendly, and communication is very good. The location is handy, just a few minutes from Catedhral and the train station. Breakfast was good for 4 Euro, and the heating was on. Jan

The rooms were cosy, with funky decor, and refreshments were available all the time. It's very central and close to several main sites. The staff were friendly, and getting in after check-in hours was easy.

We were very disappointed and upset with Hostel Mafer. One of us became seriously ill, and even after we provided hospital papers, they kept the money for a stay we never used. We feel that was ethically and morally wrong. Taking money from someone dealing with a health emergency feels like putting money above people. To us, it felt like stealing, and they should be ashamed. We made a last-minute booking late on Sunday night, hoping to visit Santiago de Compostela catedral. We were in Asturias at the time. Early the next morning, one of us became very ill, so we cancelled everything and headed straight home to go to the hospital. We let Hostel Mafer know immediately and cancelled the reservation so the room could be made available again. It was booked for just one short night. Once we were home and the situation had stabilized, we sent the hospital documents and asked them to accept the cancellation and refund us. At first they didn't reply. After several emails and messages, they eventually answered and refused, saying it was a non-refundable reservation.
