Cuevas Almagruz

Manuel, the host, was funny and engaging, and gave us useful advice about the area. Our cave apartment was spotless and had everything we needed. The grounds, barbecue area, and pool in front of the cave rooms could use a little attention, which is why I didn’t give five stars.

Staying here was the highlight of our Spain trip. Our large suite exceeded expectations, with a fireplace, dining area, and a kitchen stocked with everything we needed. The host even left us some food and coffee. The setting was stunning, and we loved that an employee gathered the guests for a tour of the cave museum on the property. Another night, the host brought us together for a drive to the top of a mountain to watch sunset. The views across the Spanish Badlands were spectacular. It’s not too far from Grenada, though not close enough that we wanted more than one day trip there. Guadix is nearby, and I’d recommend it to anyone curious about cave life. About a third of the people there live in caves, and there’s another good museum in town. There’s also a nice pool, though we didn’t have time to use it. We loved this part of the trip.

Two nights was nowhere near enough. There’s so much we still want to learn about the cave way of life and its incredible history. What an amazing place.

The clean pool and spotless apartment were great. The room was more like a whole house carved into the hillside, with a large bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, and dining room. It stayed at 20° inside while it was 38 outside, and there was shade for the car. The kitchen had an oven, microwave, fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. The local towns have hotels and cafés but little else, and I had to drive 8km to a 2m x 8m supermarket, so bring supplies.
