Hotel Alfonso I

The sheets had a plastic feel, so I slept terribly. For the high price, the quality was low. They do provide water in the room, but you have to get it yourself.

A bit of a walk from the center, but it was worth it. The room was very large, the bed amazingly comfortable, and the bathroom beautiful. Really nice hotel and staff. I loved the place, and it was good value for money.

The reception staff were very friendly, which was the good part. The room itself was just okay, and the sound insulation was basically nonexistent. We could hear every conversation and TV, so sleep wasn’t fun. The bath area is higher than the rest of the floor, and there’s no door or anything to stop water coming out. When we bathed, it flooded the bathroom and made a literal pool. Who thought that was a good idea? Breakfast ran from 7h30 until 9h30, which felt very early for us. A cleaning lady came into our room at 8h30 while we were usually still asleep. We tried getting up early one day, but the breakfast itself was disappointing, so it didn’t feel worth the effort. Cleaning wasn’t their strong point either. On our first night, there was a big bug in the room and we killed it. I left it on the floor, and it was still there the next day, and the day after that too. They came in, made the bed and left new towels, but never actually cleaned the room during our stay.

Everything they offered was top quality, so I don’t begrudge the price, even though it seemed a bit steep for the size of the hotel compared with my other bookings and their locations. The staff and services were great, with a secure garage, good wifi and a full breakfast. The cafe bar serves big pints of draught beer and the tastiest, fresh, plentiful tapas I’ve had in Spain. It was a meal in itself. Whether you’re glad to leave Portugal behind or just passing through, you won’t regret stopping here. It’s handy for starting a coastal drive around Galicia. Go see Baiona, it’s a fantastic place.
