Verneda Mountain Resort

The campsite sits in a pretty mountain valley by the river, with lots of trees and shade. You can hike straight from the site, and there's a heated outdoor pool and a nice bar and restaurant. The wash block is modern, clean and well equipped. I'd recommend staying here, and we'd come back when the kids are a bit older. We felt packed in because the pitches are small. Some areas were completely empty, so it would have been nice to spread people out more. A privacy hedge beside the road near the pool would help, too. Reception staff didn't seem able to help with booking or getting information about kids' activities.

Great football pitch, and there's a lovely riverside walk nearby. The pool slide is fun for kids, though it'd be good if the pool were heated in cold weather, even during summer, so it could actually be used. The café is comfortable, the facilities are clean and the valley location is prime. For a short stay of 2-3 days, it's a nice spot. But the pitches are packed in very tightly, and you can hear the fast road running alongside the site. Those are the two things that would put us off booking a longer stay.

The restaurant was friendly and served good food and beer at reasonable prices, and the pool is a decent size. The Spanish Pyrenees setting is lovely. Facilities were very clean, though showers and toilets sometimes had queues. They have other facilities available while the main block is being cleaned, but those should really be open all the time. Avoid pitch area 37 if you can, it's busy with parked cars and traffic entering the site. Premium pitches are huge and probably the best choice, though they cost an extra €5 per night.

The facilities are top notch and the staff are lovely, but the campsite felt cramped and too structured for my taste. Pitches are the standard 80 square metres, yet there are so many motorhomes, and the narrow, long site with steep cliffs on both sides felt a bit claustrophobic. It's expensive, though the location is prime and the quality is high. I enjoyed the stay and understand why it's rated so highly, but I'd probably look elsewhere next time.
