Mayleko Lodge

We spent two nights at The Mayleko during a month of travel around Ethiopia and had a great time. The rooms were great, the WiFi worked, and the food was incredible. Staff and owners were super friendly. Five big stars.

Mayleko Lodge was easily the best place we stayed on our whole trip. We had six hours there before our flight from Gondar back to Addis, at the end of our time in the north. Since we’d already visited Gondar before heading to Simeon mountains, it was a beautiful spot to rest after hiking. Our room was very comfortable and spotless, and the fast Wifi was a real bonus. Internet elsewhere had been hit and miss, often painfully slow. The lodge is perfectly placed if you’re flying into Gondar, but even if you aren’t, I think it’s worth going out of your way to stay there, especially for a few days of rest. Ethiopia was one of the most fascinating countries I’ve ever visited. Traveling there can be challenging, but it’s more than worth the effort.

The staff did try hard to make our stay better, and that’s the only positive I can point to. This was the worst place I’ve stayed in Ethiopia so far. There were no mosquito nets on the beds, construction went on in the middle of the night, and the advertised pool couldn’t be used. At $90 a night, the breakfast was a joke, especially for such a premium price.

The beds were great, the rooms cute, the shower amazing, and the view nice. The food was good too, though I would’ve liked more choice at breakfast and dinner. We were the only customers at the time. Just a note, the pool wasn’t usable 🤷🏻
