Red Rock Lalibela Hotel

The rooms were simple, but comfortable, and the location is handy for downtown. We got a complimentary welcome coffee and popcorn, plus a glass of the local honey wine. Everyone on staff was very nice and generous, so it felt like good value for the money.

We only needed somewhere to sleep for two nights, and Red Rock Lalibela worked well for that. The place is quaint, the facilities were clean, and the bed was very comfortable. I like a firm mattress, and this was the best sleep we had in Ethiopia. Our host was gracious too. Since it was our first visit, we asked the hotel to arrange a guide, and that turned out to be a great call. Tadisse Selaw knows the area well, having grown up there, and is full of knowledge about Ethiopian history and the churches. He was accommodating, honest, and worked long hours to make sure we were comfortable. He even found me a barber and stayed beyond his call to see that things went well. He also invited us to brunch at his family home and to a local watering hole for a cultural show. If you need a guide, I'd recommend him. The staff at Red Rock Lalibela Hotel were polite, friendly, attentive, and quick to help with whatever I asked. They also connected me with Tedessa Salew as a guide, which made my husband's and my visit to Lalibela much better. He knows the area's history and Ethiopian culture, and helped us with all our needs. He felt genuine and honest. Tedessa took us to his home for lunch and to a traditional dancing place that evening. We stayed two nights and enjoyed the green, quiet garden and the lovely view from the balcony. Water shortages are a recurring issue across the country, but at Red Rock the pump was switched on promptly whenever we asked. Shima, the manager, was keen to take care of our extra requests. Tadesse was also a great, patient guide who happily answered our many questions in fluent English.
