La Ferme Ostalapia

We didn’t stay at the hotel, just stopped for an amazing dinner. The food was as creative as the place was charming. This was the spot featured in Anthony Boudain’s San Sebastian episode.

The breakfast was tasty and nicely arranged, but we were charged an extra 90 euros. At Ostalapia, we were asked what we wanted without being told there’d be an added charge. I’d expect breakfast to be included at a bed and breakfast. We were three people staying two nights in a beautiful room. The decor and mountain view were top class, and the rooms were nice, but one bed was so worn down it had a U shape. In the afternoons and evenings, some mechanical installation above the room made the terrace door rattle and shutter constantly. A nice stay in some ways, but below expectations.

The restaurant was lovely and quaint, but it was closed. Our room was traditionally styled for the region, and I loved the paintings on the walls. The hotel was clean, the views of the mountains were beautiful, service was good, and the rooms weren’t too expensive. Breakfast was simple. I would have liked a local cheese. Highly recommend this Pas Basque hotel.

The restaurant is beautiful and rustic, with outstanding views of the Pyrenees, but the meal was a real letdown after hearing so much about it from French local family. Maybe it was just a bad day. There were only five tables to serve, yet our meal took over two hours. The rillettes were complimentary, but came with stale bread passed off as toasted. The starters arrived stone cold, as if they hadn’t been defrosted long enough. The atmosphere didn’t help. Management’s friends seemed to be the only ones getting friendly chats and free "digestifs" at the end of their meal. I love dogs, but barking in the restaurant and begging at guests’ tables wasn’t ideal either. L'habit ne fait pas le moine. I was very disappointed, and if management is reading this, I won’t be back.
