I couldn’t find a tour from here, since they all seemed to start in Paris, Caen, or Bayeux, so I went exploring on my own. Locals spoke little or no English. A public bus takes about an hour to reach Omaha Beach, then I walked for four hours along the beach and countryside, finding monuments and pillboxes before reaching the American Cemetery. Gold Beach is about an hour’s walk east of the hotel. The view of Churchill's artificial harbors is great, and there are German pillboxes to explore nearby. The hotel is old and has few amenities, but it did what I needed. I chose it for a Normandy stay and enjoyed the sunset over the water. There are plenty of classic French bistros and restaurants next door.

We only stopped here to eat while passing through on a tour, rather than staying overnight. The food was delicious, the service was lovely, and we really liked the atmosphere.

We went to the restaurant wanting bread, but only one of the three of us got any. I had a cheeseburger and a family member had a croque monsieur, and they said those dishes already included bread, so they wouldn’t provide a proper bread basket. Seriously? We also found dirt in the salad. That’s basic hospitality, and they failed at it. I won’t be back.

The rooms and beds were comfortable and clean, though the hotel itself could use a refurb. I visited in early September 26 and got bitten by mosquitoes a lot, so bring repellent.

The town is lovely and the view of the beach was stunning. The bed was fairly comfortable, and free parking is available from 7pm to 9am. But a shower longer than five minutes started flooding the bathroom floor. The hotel needs updating, with no lift, fans, or air conditioning, and dated decor that has an old, musty feel. One employee was very rude when I asked for an extra towel, though a nicer man came along and helped sort it out. We didn’t eat there because the restaurant reviews were terrible, and walking through it didn’t make it look appealing.
