The staff were brilliant, the food was good, and it was great value.

It’s better to say very little.

The village’s history is a nice reason to visit, and the hotel and restaurant are excellent. It’s only a short walk from the train station. Our room was clean and odor-free, the staff were welcoming and friendly, and the restaurant served generous, beautifully presented portions made with fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

We were left alone in the hotel for the night with our dog, after the manager left and no staff were around. We had no choice but to stay, and ended up making our own bed with sheets from the filthy linen cupboard on the landing. There were no shutters, curtains or soap, and we left without using the bathroom beyond reluctantly using the toilet. We couldn’t even freshen up before getting back on the road. The manager still asked us to pay extra for our dog, though we requested a full refund. It was utterly disgusting, and photos will delight the health inspectors. The kitchen, freely accessible from the hotel rooms, was in the same state. This all began when we arrived at an empty, staffless hotel. The manager rushed us in, visibly stressed, fumbling with his tablet and unable to print a receipt. He hurried us into the first room, but we called him back straight away because the condition was appalling. Hair covered the mattress, duvet and pillows, and there was hair on the floor too. The sink was filthy, as was the bathroom on the landing. When we asked to change rooms, he didn’t apologize and blamed his cleaning lady, saying, “She only has five hours to clean five rooms; that's not right. I'll talk to her about it.” The second room was just as bad, if not worse. Its bathroom was dilapidated, the toilet and seat weren’t fixed down, and the sink and shower were filthy and full of hair. The toilet bowl had stagnant water, there was a piece of a zipper on the floor, and dirt was everywhere. The bedroom floor was covered in hair and tobacco smudges. There was less hair on the bed, but the sheets hadn’t been changed and smelled of sweat. We were stunned, appalled by the whole situation.
