Camping d'Autun

Autun is a lovely little town, and we enjoyed our three nights in the mobile home. It was clean, shaded, well cared for, and private, with the equipment we needed. The couple running the campsite were very friendly. There's table tennis, an indoor playroom, and a small shop, and you can order bread for the next morning, though 9 o'clock feels a bit late. Just be aware that the campsite doesn't rent out bicycles.

There are cycle routes nearby, and the Roman temple ruins of Janus are close enough to visit. Our long motorhome and awning fit comfortably on the spacious pitch. The campsite is quiet, with mature trees and hedges marking out the pitches. The toilets and showers were spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The walk into Autun and over to the Temple of Janus is easy, and the pitches are large, with tall hedges for privacy. The sanitary block was clean, and the staff gave us a lovely welcome. The only downside was a large group of foreign workers walking around the campsite and shouting into their phones.

Autun is well worth the roughly 15-minute walk. It has lots of Roman history, a strong community feel, great shops for finding an antique bargain, and we saw a very moving French commemoration of the end of WW2 on 8th May. The site itself is beautiful, with good hedges between the pitches normally, and the couple managing it were helpful and friendly. We arrived after floods, and the water damage was still visible nearby. Some parts were waterlogged, so we were glad to park half on grass and half off it. The shower and toilet blocks are big, but my shower would run for literally two seconds at a time, and it wasn't just the usual automatic stop. Composting deserves a mention too, as this was the first site where we've seen it.
