We knew from the photos not to expect much, but the reviews still seem far too generous. The room had a heavy old smoke smell as soon as we walked in. The bed wasn't very comfortable, and the bedding, pillows and sheets seemed decades old. I doubt they'd ever heard of fabric softener. When we left, we saw wool bed throws hanging out of the windows, so we wondered whether they were washed at all. The place badly needs an update. The bathroom space is poorly used: the room itself is big, but the shower is a tiny cubicle with a door narrower than my shoulders, and I'm only a slim 5'3" girl. It's all right for one night on the way through, but I wouldn't stay longer. I can't comment on the restaurant.

The management were friendly, and it was quiet and very good value for money. The region is beautiful.

We were really disappointed. This was the most expensive hotel on our trip, and the only one where we had such a bad stay. The room was freezing, around 14 degrees Celsius by our estimate, even with two radiators and an oil-filled tub. We slept in sweaters under the duvet. The room was dirty too: the bath mat, towel and bathtub were unclean, and there was dust and an empty bottle under the bed. It made us wonder whether it had been cleaned before we arrived. We'd already been cold during the day and looked forward to warming up with a hot bath and a comfortable room, but couldn't use the bathtub because it had no drain. The good Google reviews had given us a different impression.
