Chateau de la Rapee

We used this as a base for three lovely nights, and the location and food were fab. We went for the set menu rather than À la carte each evening, and all three courses were brilliant every time. The staff looked after us so well. We’ll be back!

The food and breakfast service were extremely expensive for what you got, and the prices didn’t match the level of service. After two nights, we left feeling robbed. It may look like a chateau, but the place was surely in much better condition years ago. We mostly saw English tourists and no French visitors, which made us think local people know it’s a rip-off. If you want fair prices, decent accommodation, and a real taste of good French cuisine, find somewhere else in the area. We did, and won’t return. Hopefully this saves someone else from the same scam we experienced. Tourist trap, stay away!

The people working here were charming, friendly, and clearly focused on service. The wine list went beautifully with dinner, which is a must. We loved the cream based mushroom soup, then had grilled pork chops with a cream based sauce, very Normandy, and sea bass with mussels. The desserts were classic. The setting is an immaculate 1825 Chateau tucked into the woods beside a horse training facility. Rooms are big and gorgeous, with lovely wood and tile floors, high ceilings, and modern bathrooms. There’s a lovely salon with a working fireplace for drinks before or after, and the dining room feels stately and warm, with elegant wood beams. Fantastic is an understatement. Ebert would give it two thumbs up.

We wished we could have stayed longer. The room was great, and dinner in the restaurant was sublime. It’s run by people who are incredibly friendly and helpful.
