Maison Raphaël Kafka

We had a holiday with friends and family, and staying with Raphael felt like being at a friend’s place. He’s warm and professional, speaks excellent English, and is a gifted, creative artist: a fashion designer, painter and imaginative cook. The food was delicious. The interior is quirky but tastefully traditional, and spotless. We stayed in the Bobine room, with a magical view of the river and old town. It felt like a ballerina’s studio, with wonderful decor, and the bed was fabulous. There’s no air conditioning, but the house has a lively student-flat feel, so we left the doors open and enjoyed a lovely Mediterranean breeze. The highlight was Raphael’s seven-course menu, a real culinary journey. His Thursday after-work garage party was a sensation too. People gather in the backyard under parasols and lanterns, while the two garages become a bar and lounge like a cozy living room. It costs €15 per person and includes one drink, such as beer, cola, mojito or Fanta. Breakfast in the living room with the patio doors open and a view of the river was a delight. If you want an overpriced luxury hotel, this isn’t the place, but if you love the country and want to meet its people, it’s perfect. We’re looking forward to coming back.
