Our best days were out on the cycle routes, which start right from the doorstep. The Bois de Forts is a lovely forest with lots of different paths, including the Veloroute de Flanders. We took that the other way to Esquelbecq and its chateau, then went on to Mont Cassel. There's also a clever numbering system that lets you design your own route across this part of France and much of Flanders. We came to cycle and parked outside the property for the whole stay without needing the car. It's just steps from Bergues' main square and its several very good restaurants, and a short walk to the castle. Many great B&Bs in the area are in more rural places, so this location was ideal. Valerie was a friendly, exceptional host. She booked a restaurant for our first night and made a glorious French breakfast both mornings. Guests can use the two courtyards, with their pretty seating areas, and we could store our bikes in one of them, which was very useful. We had the comfortable, well-kept Abbey Room, with tea and coffee facilities and a small lounge. It's up two flights of stairs, which wasn't a problem for us, but wouldn't suit someone with limited mobility. There's a room on the first floor and, I believe, another on the ground floor too. An exceptional stay, and we'll be back!
