Chateau Grattequina

The heated swimming pool was a real treat, and I loved finding bicycles around the chateau, since I hadn’t ridden one in many years. There were so few guests that we hardly saw anyone, and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. We’d heard about it from a friend and were glad we came. The pretty chateau has a peaceful setting, and our room was very fresh for the season. The room decor could be better, and the pool area is so quiet that a self-service way to get a drink would be nice. Highly recommend this place.

The grounds are beautifully kept, and I could happily spend the day in the gardens with a book and coffee or wine. My wife and I stayed 5 nights at Chateau Grattequina in late fall, after time in Paris, and it was exactly what we wanted. The location worked perfectly for trips into downtown Bordeaux and to the beautiful Bordeaux wine AOCs. Our room was very clean and brilliantly decorated, with a quiet, serene feel, even during the corporate event held on 2 of our days. The staff were helpful and available when needed without being pushy. They suggested some great dinner spots and helped us make reservations. Breakfast was delicious and just right, with eggs and bacon for the English/American palate, plus bread, pastries, fruit, yogurt, jams, cereals, and accouterments. The food menu is small, but every item we tried was well prepared, nicely portioned, and delicious, all at surprisingly reasonable prices. I’ll definitely come back someday.

We picked the room with the elegant terrace, a lovely place for coffee while watching the sunrise or for a glass of wine later. The rooms are beautifully appointed, the service is attentive, and the whole place makes for a peaceful retreat. Highly recommend.

We had a very enjoyable stay. With only 10 rooms, it felt as if we had the castle to ourselves. The riverfront setting is lovely, and you can have breakfast or a light dinner there. The receptionist made a real difference, organizing our visits and sharing great restaurant and wine tour tips. The owner also took us by boat to central bordeaux. It’s a 4 stars hotel, so don’t expect 5 stars, and that was fine with us. The rooms could use a refresh, and a bar, perhaps self service, by the pool would be nice. They don’t have a restaurant, but with insights there are lots of options around, and they offer delicious light plates.
