48 Degres Nord Landscape Høtel

Being there in winter was such a pleasure. The hotel and its setting are so beautiful, it's hard to find words for the place. It feels like much more than somewhere to simply spend time and relax.

Breakfast was all organic and locally sourced, so don't expect things like oranges or avocado, though I didn't miss them. We also ordered the well-known basket for two twice, brought right to the cabin with local cheese, charcuterie, pâté, salads, warm baguette and desserts. Our larger cabin had a Nordic bath and private sauna, both of which we used every day. There are 14 wooden cabins, called hyttes in Danish, reflecting the Danish way of living, in Breitenbach, Alsace. Greenery and organic farms surround the place, and the whole concept is astonishingly peaceful. It felt like heaven on earth. My only small thought is that breakfast could run longer than two hours, though I'm not sure that would make sense. We'll be back.

The staff really made the stay. They were kind, helpful, and happy to take care of anything we needed. Our pod was a tiny house with a hot tub, set quietly among nature with lovely views, and we found it incredibly restful. We meant to visit the nearby tourist towns but couldn't pull ourselves away. The place is built around the Danish idea of hygge, and I'd happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys glamping.

The restaurant was a highlight, with inventive but still authentic Alsace food from a great chef. The ingredients and wine came from close to the resort, though I'm not sure about the coffee. Breakfast was excellent, with a view, and the young staff were very friendly. The setting is peaceful, overlooking the valley around Breidenbach, with 14 wooden hytten in Nordic style and a central building with the restaurant and spa. These tiny houses feel different from a standard hotel room, but ours was comfortable and had what we needed. Some have a hot tub or private sauna, and some involve a fair bit of stair climbing, so check the description to make sure it suits you. You park your car and walk up, or take a buggy.
