Heco Calais Centre-Gare

For a hotel costing about 50 quid, I think it’s fair value. The rooms are a little dated and oddly designed, but fairly clean and in decent shape. The delayed check-in was straightforward, and the staff were friendly. I was surprised by the bad reviews, though I wouldn’t expect four-star standards at this price.

There are several restaurants just a few minutes away, and getting to the ferry terminal for Dover was quick and easy. We stayed our last night here before the crossing. The hotel is in the town centre, opposite the railway station, and has a secure car park. Our room for three was basic but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was continental, adequate, though not very inspiring.

It’s a very cheap place right by the main station, so the location is a real plus. The room was cleaner than I expected, fairly spacious, with working heating and a shower with good pressure. There aren’t any outlets right next to the bed, and check-in is much too late. For the price, though, it’s pretty great. You get what you pay for, so don’t expect five-star treatment.

Our room was tiny and smelled strongly of cigarettes, and there was even a cigarette burn on the bedding. If you’re coming through the Channel Tunnel and only need somewhere for a few hours, do yourself a favour and find a better option. I’d be scared to check that room with a UV light. We won’t be staying again.
