The grounds and the view were lovely, but the welcome and service felt cold from the start. The receptionist offered only a perfunctory “Bonjour,” and our waiter was just as robotic and uncaring. Courses arrived and disappeared too fast for a relaxed Sunday lunch, and nobody asked why my wife had left half her monkfish or why we barely touched the goat’s cheese dish. At this price and quality, I expected someone to check what was wrong and see what could be done. We’d returned to Hostellerie des Gorges de Pennafort after many years for a September anniversary lunch, so it was especially disappointing. The first three courses on the €95-per-person “Au bord de L'Endre” menu were excellent, especially the ravioli with foie gras and olive oil. The raspberry dessert was good too. The mains were another story: my wife’s roasted monkfish was hard and rubbery from overcooking, with sauce so strong it overwhelmed the fish, and I left half of mine. My veal portion was tiny and, though cooked correctly, was so tough it took real effort to cut and chew. The goat’s cheese crème brûlée style course was inedible to us; after one spoonful we both left it. Poor food and the staff’s lack of care are what we’ll remember from a lunch meant to be a celebration.

The room could have been a little better, but the rest of our stay was outstanding. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful, breakfast was great, and the pool and wellness centre looked like something out of a painting. It’s calm, surrounded by nature, and our suite had outdoor seating both at the front and back. The Michelin-starred restaurant can cater to all your needs.

We found the room very clean and full of character, and the staff were both professional and friendly. The beautiful grounds and surroundings also made this a great base for visiting wineries and vineyards nearby. We had dinner at the restaurant, which had previously been Michelin-rated, and enjoyed it.

The wine selection was rare and exciting, and the staff knew their stuff. They were friendly, accommodating, and classy without being snooty. We were dining as a group, and some people had allergies and were hesitant about the tasting menu after other supposed fine restaurants had ignored their needs. They chose à la carte, but the chef still wanted them to have the full gastronomic experience and created tasting dishes that suited them. The food was incredible. We’ve eaten at fine restaurants across Europe and North America, and aside from “Daniel” in NY, this was probably our second favorite dining experience. I’d recommend it even to the most discerning diners.

The setting and grounds are really nice, and the staff were professional. I had the degustation menu. Some dishes were great, though the menu as a whole felt a bit disjointed to me. The food is pretty good, and apparently there’s a helipad, though I didn’t see it. A good effort.
