Hotel Restaurant La Mre Champlain

The food arrived quickly and was good, but the restaurant was very pricey, and I wouldn’t come back because of the service and atmosphere. Unless you’re fluent in French, I wouldn’t bother. We struggled with the menu, and the waitress told us to use Google translate. She was quite rude and seemed completely uninterested in helping with our orders or giving good service.

We’ll always remember our dinner at La Mère Champlain (RESTAURANT) and hope to return someday. My wife and I ate there during our stay in early March, and it quickly became one of our favorite meals in France. The seafood platter was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented, capturing the coastal feel. Inside, the place was lively, warm, and welcoming, with a charming, authentic Breton atmosphere. A kind gentleman, who we think was the owner, looked after us personally. He was one of the friendliest, most genuine French hosts we’ve met on our travels, and even brought us a complimentary appetizer. For the quality of the food, attentive service, and lovely ambiance, the price was very reasonable. If you’re in Cancale, it’s absolutely a must-visit. Highly recommended!

We were four and just wanted lunch. There were several free tables that could seat us, but we were directed to the entrance, which seemed normal in France. A man was standing there, so we told him we wanted to eat. He didn’t answer. A few minutes later, he said in French in front of us that we didn’t speak French and were foreigners, which wasn’t true: one of us speaks French very well. We waited without any explanation for 5-7 minutes, then decided to leave. Only then did he address us, saying he was busy and we should understand. We said goodbye. He was arrogant and unfriendly, and we still don’t know why.

We had a lovely time in this charming little town, and the hotel was great. The restaurant was fantastic too. Highly recommend!
