The woman at reception, who spoke flawless English, turned the whole experience around. She was warm and helpful, and somehow answered our questions without ever explaining what number comes after 69. Simply amazing. The rest of the check-in had been frustrating: when we arrived at Les Hauts de la Houle, a man asked us for a number containing 69. We couldn’t find it on our travel documents, but when I gave my surname, he easily found an envelope with our keys. He still insisted on the number, then put the keys back in the box when I said it wasn’t on our papers. He compared it to boarding a train without a ticket. My wife said the service was well below what we expected and that a more helpful attitude would be nice. He replied with a mix of English words and French grammar. I understood him, but he didn’t seem interested in helping, and went into the back office muttering in French. He soon came back to serve French-speaking customers, apparently with great enthusiasm, while ignoring us. The man’s manner was so cold that asking him anything felt like interrupting a grumpy philosopher. I wondered if the stare was a joke or some kind of French humour, but it left me questioning all my life choices for a few seconds. He seemed to think that smiling at tourists from another country, who are spending a lot on their holiday, was a weakness. The setting itself is charming, in peaceful Cancale, with fresh air and oysters. Come for the seaside view from the park and the fresh oysters at the harbour, but be prepared for that reception. Would I return? Yes, but next time I’m bringing wine and a therapist.

The quiet setting and the short 10-12 minute walk to the city center were both great. We also liked the apartment, facilities, pool, sauna and parking. Almost everything was perfect, and the price for what you get is very good. Highly recommended!

It’s a fine base for exploring the area, including Concale, St Malo and Dinard. The place is cosy and not too crowded, the pool was heated, and the price seemed fair for the quality. The houses are on the small side, so book a bigger one if you can. The Jacuzzi shuts off for a long time after 30 minutes, WiFi costs extra, and you only get a bare minimum of towels and supplies. There isn’t even a starter pack, just one toilet roll. Check-in is at 16h and checkout at 10h. The woman at the desk was needlessly arrogant. Don’t act like you’re better than your guests, people are on holiday and should be helped to enjoy it. With a few adjustments, this place could be well worth it.

There’s a fairly hefty cleaning charge, and I don’t see how you could do that cleaning yourself with the equipment provided. Bring dishwasher tablets, washing-up cloths and liquid, kitchen roll, salt and pepper. There’s almost nothing disposable supplied, beyond a couple of toilet rolls. Perhaps that’s usual in France, but it’s different from what I’ve encountered in English holiday rentals. That’s my main complaint, as I do have high standards for cleaning. Look beyond the obvious surfaces and you may not like what you find. A deep clean was overdue, including wiping down the doors and cleaning the carpet. The pool area wasn’t cleaned daily, or perhaps at all, and it really showed. Such a shame, since the basic facilities were good and felt four-star. The location is convenient for walking or driving to amenities, though the local paths aren’t well maintained if you have a pushchair. Parking is easy, and the houses are designed with function and modern style in mind. You’re close to the neighbours, but plants separate the apartments and the proximity didn’t cause us problems. The walls seemed well insulated. Overall, it was a good base for a holiday en France.

We had to make our own beds on arrival, and nearly everything came at extra cost. WiFi was very expensive, and there was no soap, toiletries, bin bags or dishwasher tablets. Despite paying a 60 euro cleaning fee, we still had to clean the fridge and microwave, empty the bins, strip the beds and return the towels to reception. The place was filthy and full of bugs, including what seemed to be wood bugs that got everywhere. It was overpriced and offered the bare minimum in facilities. Never again.
