We booked 10 nights at Canal Cottage starting July 7 2021, encouraged by reviews on the booking site saying it was spotless. What we found in Carcassonne was completely different. The kitchen was especially dirty: the oven, microwave, fridge, cutlery, cups, plates, and cupboard were all greasy and sticky. It felt as if the house had been used for a long time without being cleaned. The bedsheets were stained and still damp too. The owner was out of town and abroad, and wouldn’t be back in Carcassonne until the 6th day of our stay. We didn’t feel we could wait. The kitchen was too dirty to use, and cleaning it ourselves would have been nearly impossible. The cottage wasn’t cheap, so we expected a basic level of hygiene. We left after the first night. Looking back at the reviews I’d read before booking, they were all from before Covid. I now see more recent reviews, and other people who stayed in 2021 seem to have had the same experience. I took pictures of the poor condition and sent them to the booking site. I absolutely wouldn’t recommend staying at Canal Cottage.

I paid almost 800€ for July 24th-31st 2021, and there was nothing good about the stay. The Irish owner was foul-mouthed, just as the Dutch guest who stayed one night because it was so dirty and nothing like the photos or description wrote on July 26th 2021. Avoid it like the plague. If you complain, don’t expect a refund, just a lot of expletives!
