Hôtel Le Donjon - Coeur de la Cité Médiévale

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet before setting out to explore the castle grounds. Our room was quiet and well appointed, reached through a small inner jardin. It’s a lovely place to spend an evening within the castle walls, right in the middle of the medieval city.

I wanted somewhere a bit old-fashioned but elegant, and this hotel was just right. Breakfast was great, and the lady on duty offered options for dietary restrictions. The one problem was that the bath didn’t work. I’d been looking forward to it after a very wet, windy day.

We were very glad to check out after five nights here with our family and three rooms. The location is what saves this property, and the restaurant off the property was quite good. Otherwise, it was a big disappointment. The two regular rooms had separate toilet closets, apart from the shower and bath. One mini fridge didn’t work and wasn’t fixed, there were broken ceiling tiles, and a shower nozzle wouldn’t stay in its holder. There were no fans, so the rooms fogged up when we showered. We had booked a suite, but didn’t get it at check-in. When we showed the front desk photos of the suite and our Booking.com confirmation, they said the room “did not exist” and called us aggressive and disrespectful. Once the manager started her shift, the suite suddenly existed and we were moved into it. The staff’s unfriendliness is what we’ll remember most, including the breakfast staff refusing to let us take a cup of coffee to our room.

The suite was spacious, with a nice coffee machine and toiletries. Breakfast was well presented and offered plenty of choice, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. A great hotel with authentic medieval architecture in a fantastic central location.
