La Chamade

We came for Easter as two families, looking for a place near Mont Saint Michael, and this turned out to be a perfect spot in every way. The road feels greener and more wooded as you approach the last property, which sits right at its end. From the house, a forest path leads to Cabane Vauban, about a 30-minute walk away. The viewpoint is on top of the mountain, looking out toward Mont Saint Michael. We took the marked forest path, which felt more adventurous, though we later found out there’s a car park close to the cabane. Veronique's mother welcomed us. She was lovely, and spoke a little English, which reminded me I still understand French. Our suite had a very comfortable double bed, a private bathroom, an attic with two beds, lots of clothes storage, and a TV. There are outside blinds on the windows, so light-sensitive sleepers can stay in bed longer. The property has two suites, so a group could have the whole place. The owner lives in the same house, but we hardly noticed them. Free parking is available on site. The Wi-Fi didn’t work at all. Breakfast was included. Veronique had the table ready at 08:00 with traditional French croissants, coffee, milk, and homemade jams. The pear and vanilla jam was especially good, and breakfast changed every day. We loved it. It’s about 40 km from there to the castle. All-day parking was 17 euros per car, payable by card or cash at a parking ATM. The bus was free, and the queue moved very quickly. Entry to the castle is free, but visiting the top costs 11 euros per adult. My 15-year-old son got in free. I’d book tickets online to avoid the line, since you can go straight in. You can buy some really nice postcards at the souvenir shops, and the post office is at the entrance. On the way back, we decided to eat outside the castle, which was a great choice. I recommend La Marquis de la Guintre (75 Rue du Mont Saint-Michel, 50220 Courtils, France). The sausages, lamb, steak, and homemade crepes were really good, and the price was very good too.
