We stumbled across this lovely hotel and village after driving away from Nice without much of a plan beyond seeing the countryside. We ended up staying three nights in a clean, comfortable room, and the owner and staff treated us with real kindness and respect. Breakfast was deluxe, with lots to choose from, and we were sorry to leave. We hope to come back before too long. Castellane makes an excellent base for exploring the breathtaking countryside. The view from the chapel above town is extraordinary, and there are chances to discover local history around every turn.

The hotel itself isn't luxurious, but the service at Ma Petite Auberge was outstanding. The receptionist also served breakfast and made our visit memorable. When I came back for something I'd left behind, he recognized us straight away and ran out to bring it to me. That felt like real VIP treatment, and it was better service than we've had anywhere else in Europe. Highly recommended if good hospitality matters to you.

The only thing I'd criticize is that the rooms are a little small, which makes sense in an old building. Everything was very clean, the staff were great, and the attention we received was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble, and the food was far better than we expected. I'd happily stay again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

The sea trout was cooked just right, and the île flottante was a dessert I'd happily have again. Portions were generous, the traditional French meal was lovely, and the service was impeccable. They welcome dogs too. Thank you!

In the lovely little town of Castellane, this is a great base for exploring the Verdon Gorges. The rooms are basic but suited us well for one night. There's a supermarket five minutes up the road if you need one. We had an excellent dinner in the beautiful garden, and the staff were friendly.
