After spending Christmas in Paris, we went to Chambord and the Loire region to finish our holiday. On our first evening at Relais Chambord, we booked Grand Saint Michele. The staff were wonderful, the food was delicious, and they helped us choose a lovely wine to go with the meal. I’m surprised by some of the other reviews because we really enjoyed both the cuisine and the service.

Really enjoyed the meal, from the caring service to food that felt thoughtfully made with love. It’s a very good restaurant, and I understand they’ve recently changed direction. Glad I got to try it. The crepe Suzette was very sweet and swimming in grad mariner.

The setting is beautiful, but dinner took two hours and cost €100 for the two of us. We waited 40 minutes for the escargot appetizer. The octopus was very good with its cream corn spread, but the chicken was dry and the sauce burnt. The green beans needed salt, and the mashed potatoes were dry and tasteless. When we asked for the check, we waited 20 minutes, then had to ask someone else because our waiter seemed to have gone home or quit, or something. It was fine, but they need to fix the service speed and take the chicken off the menu.

That view across the Chambord chateau is stunning, and the terrasse feels like your own private spot. The service was fantastic too, and the food was among the best we’ve eaten in France, which is saying a lot. I’m not sure why it’s rated so low.

We had a really great dinner, and the food was good. But the service was frustratingly slow. It was hard to get anyone’s attention to order wine or ask for the bill, and our dirty plates stayed on the table for nearly an hour. In the end we had to get up and flag someone down to pay. Breakfast service was just as slow, and the food wasn’t the best. It would be nice to have full-size pastries instead of the mini ones you’d expect at a chain hotel rather than a boutique.
