The room was peaceful and really quiet, and we loved spending time by the pool with that lovely view. We had loads of space in the room, too. We arrived Friday and had to check ourselves in because nobody was there at the time. We’d been told by email, though it would have helped to have someone explain the breakfast. It was nice, but the bread and croissants could’ve been fresher. A little sign saying what was available would be useful, like the eggs you can cook yourself and the milk and jam in the fridge.

Breakfast was generous, varied, and really good. We booked the Mucha Suite, which has beautiful, tasteful decor blending traditional and Art Nouveau styles. Domaine des Carriers is in a lovely village along the Canal du Nivernais, and the whole place charmed us. The outside is magnificent, while indoors the shared breakfast room is richly decorated in a traditional style. We didn’t quite understand the dining policy, with a €10-per-person charge for each meal eaten there, so we went out instead. We’re already thinking about coming back for another stay.

The 8:30 am breakfast is late, and that isn’t mentioned in the listing. Booking.com presents this as a hotel, but it’s actually a self-catering cottage with no cancellations. The telephone contact felt cold, calculating, and impersonal, bureaucratic and mercenary. We don’t recommend it.

We only stayed a short time at Domaine des Carriers, and wished it had been longer. It’s an unusual, warm, peaceful guesthouse, with thoughtful décor in a timeless setting. The weather was magnificent, so we got to enjoy the pool and its lovely valley view. Thanks to Hubert for sharing advice and knowledge about the property and region.
