Chez Lola

We nearly missed it because the small sign on the door was easy to overlook, so it was hard to find. Once there, we got a very nice welcome. It's a comfortable country house, and the breakfast is great.

The rooms are large and comfortable, and breakfast was good. Lola is a lovely host; we enjoyed chatting with her and the other guests. Good value for the price.

For anyone looking for a cheap thrill, this hotel could pass for a horror movie set. It started at the entrance, with stuffed animals staring from every corner, chandeliers that looked ready to move once night fell, and bare frames on the walls, as though the portraits had escaped before we did. The owner would appear and vanish from the “living room” like another member of the cast. There are no locks on the room doors, so sleeping came with a dose of adrenaline. The main entrance stays open all the time, perhaps so the ghosts can wander in and out without bothering one another. Honestly, we were close to making a run for it, literally. The one surprise was breakfast: it was really good and the only part that didn’t feel lifted from a horror script.

At Lola's, we were welcomed warmly and had lovely rooms. Dinner was generous and delicious, made from family recipes. Breakfast brought homemade yoghurt and jam, too. A good address.
