La Villa Eugène

The room cleaning was the best I’ve seen in a hotel. Toiletries were provided and replaced when used, and the luxurious bath was wonderful. The hotel is lovely, with beautiful decor and furniture full of history, and the staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast was good in a lovely part of the hotel, where an attentive waitress made us perfect coffee. We also ate in the bar one evening, and Ayfor looked after us so nicely. I chose this hotel for its beauty and its location, which was perfect for visiting the champagne houses. It really was perfect. One thing to know: because of the hotel’s age, the AC is controlled from the front office, if you’re too hot at night in a roadside room.

The property is beautiful and the staff were excellent. It really is a very good hotel. But charging guests four times what a Tesla Supercharger costs to charge an EV is hard to justify. The hotel itself isn’t the problem, it’s the poor choice of charging partner, which risks leaving a bad taste after an otherwise excellent stay.

We enjoyed the pool area, and my family looked forward to breakfast each morning. The team were friendly and welcoming, and couldn’t have been more helpful during our three-night stay at the lovely Villa Eugene. Our prestige room was spacious and beautifully decorated, especially the excellent bathroom. The setting would make an evening restaurant lovely, so it’s a shame there isn’t one. The location is excellent, about five minutes’ walk from the main champagne houses and around 15 minutes from central Epernay. One thing I’d change is the €15 nightly parking charge. It isn’t necessarily a lot, but given the room price and that driving is one of the only ways to reach the hotel, parking felt like it should be included.

Be careful about leaving your card details on their system. We agreed on the items and settled the bill before leaving, with the charge for a bottle of wine removed because it was faulty and we hadn’t consumed it. Days after checkout, the hotel quietly charged us for that bottle anyway, without notice or a transaction receipt. When we tried to sort it out, they stopped responding to our follow-up emails. EDIT: Their dismissive response is deeply unprofessional. They knew the bottle had NOT been consumed, and the receptionist who settled our bill before departure removed it. You can’t confirm a bill and then quietly take money from someone’s account without notice or an email receipt. That’s bad practice.
