Mont Bastide was a highlight of my visit. Marilyn kindly suggested the trail shortly after I arrived at Hôtel Eze Hermitage, and one entrance is just a few meters from the hotel. I walked the difficult, rugged route down to Eze Village every day. Even if you don’t do that, the climb to the peak above the sea is worth it for spectacular sunrise and sunset views of the French Riviera and the mountains. Look closely at some of my photos and you’ll see the sun setting right over Hôtel Eze Hermitage. I also hiked Nietzsche’s Path (Chemin de Nietzsche), an invigorating trail I’d recommend if you’re willing and able, but I thought Mont Bastide was even better. I chose Hôtel Eze Hermitage while looking for a place on the French Riviera for a personal writing, hiking, and meditation retreat. It was my first time in France, and the stay exceeded my expectations. Tucked into the mountains in the Côte d'Azur, the hotel is a peaceful place to enjoy Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, with short walks to breathtaking views of the sea below and mountains behind. For a meal, I highly recommend Mets Vins Chics. The staff there will take care of you with joy and suggest a great French wine. Ma Première Boulangerie is lovely for coffee, a sweet taste of Southern France, or a lunch sandwich, and the women working there bring their own joie de vivre. I’m grateful to the Hôtel Eze Hermitage staff and management for their patience with my American ignorance as a first-time visitor to France, and for helping me through the language barriers. I’ve fallen in love with the spirit of Côte d'Azur and Southern France, and I’ll be back. I look forward to staying at this lovely hotel again. Thank you for being patient with my language difficulties. Thank you for letting me discover the joy and sweetness of Côte d'Azur.

The peace here beats what you get at luxury hotels. It’s a beautiful, cozy boutique hôtel with a cottage feel, and the mountain views from the room windows take you away from the rush of big cities.

The staff were lovely, and the whole stay was memorable. There’s a cozy bar serving French champagne, plus an outdoor pool with a mountain view. The building has been newly renovated, and the hotel is far from the city’s traffic and noise. We loved it.

We liked the hotel enough to add a third night after initially booking two. The room was cozy, clean, and wonderfully quiet, and the hotel had a welcoming feel. Breakfast was fantastic each morning, and the outdoor patio was a lovely place to unwind. The staff were friendly and attentive, with special thanks to Marylin for making our stay even nicer. If you’re driving, the nearby villages of Eze and La Turbie are well worth visiting.

There’s real potential here: the place is charming, the surroundings are nice, the pool is pleasant, and breakfast was really good. The rooms have charm too, but they’re very small and so poorly soundproofed you can hear everything from the other rooms. There are only 10 sun beds for 28 rooms. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere, so having a car is best. There’s no lunch or dinner option, and the nearest restaurant is 2.5 km away, up a steep hill on the way back. It’s a 40-minute walk, or 10 minutes by bus for 4 euros if you catch one. A pickup option from Ezę village would be nice. The staff seemed very stressed and lost. It was a nice stay overall, but this location calls for a car.
