Hotel du Gambrinus

The manager was friendly and very talkative, but each time we ran into him we lost more than 40 minutes. He took it badly when we said we had somewhere to be. The hotel itself was average, with decor and housekeeping that need attention. The booking app lets you choose a smoking room and there’s an ashtray, yet smoking isn’t allowed in the room?

We spent one night in Room 16. It was quiet and clean, with pleasant vintage decor and a hot shower. In the morning there was a generous breakfast for €8, and the owner was very friendly.

There was a dead, dried-out bat stuck in the ventilation in my room. The manager was rude, and the whole place was disgusting, close to abusive conditions. He’d be better off shutting the hotel, selling up, and moving on. Don’t go, not even for 60 euros.

The room was filthy when we arrived, smelling of dust and stale tobacco. The toilet shifted while in use because it wasn’t fixed down, and the duvet covers looked as though they hadn’t been washed in years. We found it so disgusting that we left early and caught an earlier train. We’d booked while heading to the Eurotunnel, hoping to spend a day exploring the area, but the hotel was incredibly dated and only really suited to sleeping. Be warned, the photos may be 20 years old.
