Hostellerie Schwendi

A cozy spot for authentic local food and wine, and the service was great when we visited. This is my go-to restaurant in the area. I'd love to come back!

We had a very good lunch here on a Sunday during the Christmas markets in Kaysersberg. Everywhere was full, and we hadn't booked, so getting a table was a lovely surprise. The food, service, and setting were all excellent. The restaurant is in an old seller from the vineyards, and the hotel and restaurant are run by a local family whose generations have kept the business going. I highly recommend it!

We only stopped briefly, but left disappointed. My husband's cappuccino tasted like it came from an instant mix, and the ice cream was exceptionally poor. I couldn't taste either the vanilla or chocolate. It's rare for us to leave a restaurant in France feeling this way.

After 11 hours in the car, the calm at Hostellerie Schwendi was a welcome relief. We arrived in the middle of the Christmas market season around Kaysersberg and Colmar, and the place looked picture pretty and festive, yet still felt peaceful and convivial throughout. Our dog was welcome both in the room and restaurant, where she got plenty of attention. The bedroom was well appointed, with a good strong shower and a magnifying mirror, a necessity for women over and under 50 😁. Before leaving, I took her for an early frosty walk around the ramparts, with vineyards on the hillside and a gorgeous sunrise in orange, red, yellow, and pink. Dinner was memorable in the busy basement restaurant, which had no tables free even on a Monday night. The menu featured Alsatian specialties, all tasty, nicely presented, and reasonably priced. Portions were on the large side. Rene, in his Fedora hat, runs the place with character, and the team knows the local wines. They have their own wine, and the white Edelzwicker and red Pinit Gris from Schille-Gisie were highlights. No red checked tablecloths or onions in sight. We left very happy, with a case of Pinot Gris. We'll definitely return. It's also a good alternative route to the Alps from Blighty if you stay a couple of nights and brave those picture pretty Christmas markets, like the castle in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on speed 😀.
