Finding a room in Taipei during the third day of Lunar New Year was nearly impossible. I ended up booking a guesthouse through a travel site after my friend had booked me a hotel with a shared toilet, which I couldn't accept. I asked her to cancel it, but still had to pay for another night 😭. It was my first visit to Taiwan, and I’d booked my flight at the last minute. The two-week trip itself went well: I stayed in hotels in Kaohsiung and with friends in Taichung.

The welcome was good, and the place is close to the highway and a couple of restaurants. But the room was tiny and filthy: hair in the bed, a suspicious white mark on the bedspread, a yellowed old pillow, and a dirty toilet. There was nowhere to store anything, and the bathroom was even smaller than a hospital shower. The hallways were dirty too, with dust in the corners and a bucket of dirty water left out beside an empty beer can. Honestly, avoid it. For €10 to €20 more, you can get a clean room and a good night’s sleep. If that’s beyond your budget, bring your own sheets and towels.

We’d booked ahead, but still had to find another hotel when we got there. Reception was shut even though we arrived before 9 PM, and none of our cards worked with the automatic check-in system.

This is an old F1 hotel, and everything feels worn out and dirty. There’s no air conditioning. I wouldn’t recommend it, especially since it’s expensive compared with other hotels.
