A quiet spot to visit, with just a few peacocks in the yard. The Château is nicely preserved.

The eclectic art display makes wandering around the chateau more fun, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are lovely gardens with activities for children, so it’s a real gem if you’re visiting with kids. The restaurant food was OK, though bringing your own picnic wouldn’t mean missing out.

We spent a full day painting in the gardens during our two-night stay, and the whole experience was wonderful. The dinner at the Secret Garden was okay, though not great, so we’ll probably skip it when we return. We’ll definitely be back.

The rooms were lovely and comfortable, and breakfast was excellent each morning. One of the breakfast hosts was especially warm and engaging, which we appreciated. Beyond that, our family found the welcome disappointing. Most staff seemed unfriendly, and one person was notably rude as we were leaving, which left us with a bad final impression. We’d been looking forward for months to staying at Château du Rivau, expecting a highlight of our two-week trip to France given the reputation and price. It fell well short. The château is beautiful, but at that cost we expected better service, comfort, and care for guests. The lighting was poor throughout, so many areas felt dark and hard to get around. The shower water was only lukewarm during our stay. We were also let down by the advertised concierge-style help. The brochure says staff can arrange things like wine tastings, but when we asked, we were told this had to be organized weeks ahead. We contacted a winery ourselves and got a tasting booked for the next day, which made that answer particularly frustrating. Maybe other guests have a different experience, but we left disappointed, not delighted. I’ve never written a negative review before, but this stay left me feeling I had to share it.

The gardens are enchanting, with a rose garden and playful sculptures, and the medieval towers and art installations make Château du Rivau feel like a fairytale. The place has a peaceful, creative charm, and every corner seems to have a story. A delightful, inspiring visit for people of all ages.
