Hôtel Brueghel

The fudge sweets at reception were the one highlight for me, but I wouldn’t come back. This felt like a mid-range B&B at best, and while it’s well placed near the station, that location alone doesn’t justify the cost. The room was tiny, dated, and cold, with no kettle. I couldn’t sit normally on the toilet because my knees wouldn’t fit, so I had to turn sideways with them under the sink. The walls and ceiling are so thin that you can hear everything.

The hotel is dated, though it’s well located, and noise from outside carries right into the room. Our upgraded room came with a bath, but there was nowhere to hang the shower head. They wouldn’t let me downgrade so we could get a decent shower.

The room was cozy and comfortable, and the location was very convenient. Staff were helpful and polite. Breakfast felt limited for the price, and it was served in a tiny space. We didn’t feel the amount we paid was reflected in the stay, though it wasn’t bad either. I got the impression management wasn’t very keen on providing a level of service that matched the price.

There are lovely old touches here, including a gorgeous lift, and the location is excellent. Our room was very basic. We chose a bath, but didn’t realise that meant there wouldn’t be a shower as well, so bear that in mind. We didn’t try breakfast, so can’t comment on it. If you want an affordable, basic room in a great spot, this hotel works well. If you’re after more glamour and luxury, it won’t be the right choice.
