Moxy Lille City

The staff were great and the location was good, but the room was disappointing. There was hardly any water pressure in the shower, so washing was difficult. Staff knew about it but couldn't fix it. I asked for extra pillows and was told none were available, apparently a known issue.

Breakfast was a highlight, with plenty of options and very good freshly prepared food. The room was comfortable overall, with good bedding and decent space, but the furniture carried on the youthful hostel-style look and wasn't very practical. We stayed at the Moxy Hotel Lille just before New Year. The playful design seems aimed at a younger crowd, though it can feel like it's trying a bit hard for the price. Most guests we saw were older than us, and we're in our mid-30s, so the intended crowd felt a little off. A few maintenance problems got in the way of comfort: the shower door was broken and wouldn't close fully, so it flooded the floor towel, especially unpleasant in winter. One of the two heaters in the room also didn't work. It was a decent stay with a clear concept, but those basic issues let it down.

The room wasn't properly heated during a rainy, wet weekend, and the temperature is controlled centrally. When I asked the man at the front desk for an extra cover for our bed, he said they'd run out. He didn't even try to find another solution, like getting a bedsheet from an empty room. In all my years travelling around the world, this was a first. Bring an extra pijiama if you plan to stay here. It's a real disappointment, especially since the hotel is well located and has a nice design concept.

The accessible room didn't feel accessible at all. My wheelchair couldn't get over the bump at the entrance, and in the bathroom I couldn't get up to the sink in it. There was no shower chair, and I wasn't going to take my wheelchair into the shower. The mirror was too high to use for makeup, there were no comfortable chairs, and the room had none of the normal extras. It's not somewhere I'd go if I wanted those small comforts. The whole hotel is kept freezing for ecological reasons. Staff were lovely and brought me another duvet, but I still couldn't get warm, even sleeping in a hat, thermal vest, warm night dress, and two duvets. I asked for a kettle because I need to take medicine with a hot drink. They suggested I come down to reception in my night dress to get one, so I took tea up to bed and had to take my medicine with cold tea the next morning. Breakfast costs €17, but there was nothing for people needing gluten-free or dairy free options, or other dietary needs. Bring your own slippers too. For part of the Marriot chain, I'd expected slippers and tea and coffee facilities. The beds are really comfortable, and the staff were lovely. The bar and entrance are beautiful, and the building itself is fantastic. It's a pleasant, safe area, though it took me half an hour to walk into town in my power chair. The room was cold and claustrophobic, with cold decor, and one of the nastiest hotel stays I've had in a long time. I thought maybe I was just not the target age for Moxie, but my millennial son said he doesn't like it either. They need to go a bit further, because the staff are willing to make it enjoyable. The bedrooms have no soul, and instead of grey boxes they could have some of the beautiful pictures from the entrance of the building, nearby streets, or area. I also plead with hotels offering accessible rooms to make sure wheelchair users can see out of the window. Someone chronically ill or disabled and travelling for pleasure wants a holiday and to feel wanted. Moxie made me feel like a burden.
