Camping Les Hautes Prairies

I had a dream week at this wonderful campsite, staying in a lovely house that had everything I needed. The pool was clean and warm, and the restaurant and bar service was excellent. The reception staff were always smiling and ready to help. I recommend it wholeheartedly!

The location is still amazing, just a short walk from a beautiful little town with great shops and restaurants. The pool area was clean and well maintained too, though there wasn’t much shade unless you got there early. The bar staff were lovely. But we came here in 2019 and loved it, and this visit was a real letdown. The staff at arrival were dismissive and inattentive, even though they weren’t busy. The site has filled up with chalets, bringing more cars and dust, and it feels like it expanded without enough maintenance. The main unisex shower block was crowded, so we used the one near the chalets. After four days, it had only had a hose-down. Hair was clogging the shower trays, which were vile, and cobwebs had been left around the ceiling for a long time. On the morning of day four I tried to tell reception, but the person barely let me finish before calling someone, presumably to arrange a clean. It was rude, and I found myself apologising, though I assumed it would get sorted. The block was eventually cleaned much later the following day, but the washing-up area wasn’t. There’s no chemical toilet at that end, so carrying a cassette down to the toilets at the lower end is a long walk. The motorhome service area has a chemical waste point but no separate tap, so people rinse their cassettes with the fresh water hose. Ew. The location keeps them busy, I suppose, but this felt like bad management. We can only presume it’s become a franchise.

The facilities on site are very good, including the sanitary block, laundry, and a really nice big pool. It’s also well placed for getting into town. The pitches are spacious and shady, though quite dusty and earthy, with lots of ants, which is just the area. One night a group kept enjoying themselves at the pétanque until 3am. That wouldn’t put me off coming back.

The pool was impeccably clean, and the campsite was tidy and well maintained. The staff were attentive and friendly, often taking time from their busy days for a chat or a laugh. Luciana at reception was especially helpful and knowledgeable, and made sure we had everything we needed from the moment we arrived. We had fun with the activities, especially karaoke and trying Pétanque for the first time. The food was great too, and our two teenagers ordered escargot several times. It was a great first visit, and we enjoyed it so much that we decided to come back next summer.
