Globe et Cecil Hôtel

The location is smart, close to many of Lyon’s interesting sites and restaurants. The room was okay, though the bathroom was dated, and both the lobby and room felt cold. On Valentine Day, my partner and I were sitting in the crowded lobby, looking at our phones and having drinks. We were asked to move to the cold club for a private party, and we were the only people asked to leave. It put me in a bad place, especially since just moments earlier my partner had said what a nice place it was to hang out. I expect other people’s stays will be fine, but I won’t come back.

The design is superb, from the lobby and restaurant to the corridors and room, and the location is great. But the rest made for a pretty bad stay. The toilet ventilation didn’t work, so the room always smelled like poop. A service person said they’d check it, but I don’t think they did, and it was never fixed. Breakfast was terrible, especially the scrambled eggs. The Wi-Fi in my room was also awful. I reported it, and they said they’d restart the router, which I expected wouldn’t help. It didn’t. On top of that, you have to leave the key every time you go out. It’s a hassle, and sometimes I had to wait to get back to my room after a long day. It also didn’t feel secure: they handed me the key just because I gave my room number, without checking anything. They really need to do better.

We’ll make this our first choice when we come back. The rooms were spacious, modern, and clean, and every staff member we met was welcoming and polite.

The room wasn’t especially big, but it was laid out well and felt comfortable and practical. Breakfast had plenty of choice and was good quality. We also found the welcome warm from the start, with staff who were polite, attentive, and friendly throughout. Hotels nearby tend to cost an astronomical amount, so Hôtel Globe et Cecil felt like a much more reasonable option without a drop in quality. We were very happy with our stay and would gladly return.
