Europe Hotel

I booked a twin room, but they didn’t give me one. The staff insisted I hadn’t booked it and made me take a bigger, more expensive room. Later, I found my original booking, which was indeed for a twin. I’ve asked for a refund of the price difference, but none of my messages have been answered. The bathroom and the entrance staircase smelled awful, and there was a slight smell of smoke everywhere because smoking is allowed in the hotel. The bathroom worked, but the so-called shower was an open bathtub with the shower head at knee height. Not great. The staff lacked customer service and seemed not to care about their reputation. I had the misfortune of staying here.

The location was really good for such a cheap hotel, but that was about the only plus. The room was very small, with barely enough space to open our suitcases and only a tiny desk. The bathroom was also small, dated, and not very clean. If you’re an English-speaking tourist, you’ll need some French because the staff don’t speak English. They could show us the key instructions using a translation app, though.

The room was really nice, and the reception team were friendly and helpful when we arrived. Breakfast was fine, nothing special but it did the job. We thought the hotel was good value and would stay here again on another trip to Marseille.

The one good thing was the kind staff. Everything else felt far too expensive: in July 2018, €40 seemed like a fair price for two people, not €107. The hotel is very old and needs reconstruction. Breakfast was basic, and the coffee tasted bad. Our room wasn't very clean, and the bathroom was covered in fungus. Wi-Fi barely worked, only showing three lines and not connecting properly. In the mid-July heat, the air conditioner did very little. Opening the window meant traffic fumes, noise, and mosquitoes, so we slept terribly. Even though it's in the old harbour area in the city centre, we didn't feel safe at all. I wish I'd skipped Marseille.
