The place has that faded, bohemian charm, with quirky art everywhere rather than a pristine château feel. Our bedroom was huge, with a large shared terrace, and the bathroom was lovely. Dinner was good, home-cooked, and served by charming people. I’d recommend it if you want to get away from it all, especially if you love books and the village. A lovely stay.

The beautiful setting and amazing live music were the bright spots, and the young man serving us was pleasant despite being overworked. But the evening was still unpleasant. There were nine of us and we waited two hours for the main course. We kept having to ask for water, and even had to find our own cutlery. The vegetarian curry came without rice, and the steak was overcooked. The head waitress was very rude and condescending. They removed the steak and wine from the bill, but handled it without much grace.

We were there in April, when the restaurant was closed, though the internet photos make the food look promising. It’s easy to picture how lovely it must be in summer, sitting outdoors with live music. The old house is being renovated well by its owner, and it has the grandeur and character of the early 20th century, with distinctive rooms like the billiard room and bar. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, service is friendly, and the typically French breakfast was fine.
